What skills will I learn?

  • Enhance your communication skills
Effectively communicating allows you to understand and be understood by others, and involves listening, speaking, observing and empathising.
  • Active Listening
Developing active listening skills will help harness inter-personal relationships as well as our ability to influence, persuade, negotiate and avoid conflicts.  Non-verbal communication and body language play an equally important part of active listening.
  • Empathy vs Sympathy
You will explore the difference between empathy and sympathy and its importance when having conversations with others and in counselling and everyday situations.
  • Personal Development
You will learn about yourself and the positive impact counselling skills can play. Discover more about self-awareness and experience what it’s like to be in a counselling session, both as a counsellor and as a client.
  • Learn about the role of a counsellor
The course allows you to participate in practical techniques which help to understand and explore the role of a counsellor or as a someone seeking counselling.  Learn how closed and open questions work and how to respond with reflective counselling skills which can help to facilitate different perspectives on situations.
  • Counselling Skills in the workplace
Having empathy for others is an important part of relationship building and improving mental health in the workplace.  Being mindful of the thoughts, feelings, and needs of others improves productivity and morale.   There are times in the workplace when you may have to deal with conflict. Although you may not always agree with others’ opinions, it’s important to be open to the experiences and perspectives of your peers, and the best way to demonstrate this is through active listening.
  • Endings
Endings are something we will all experience and the course explores loss and the impact it can have, not just from bereavement, but from loneliness, isolation, relationships.

Our student feedback

“A really interesting, insightful and enjoyable course, thank you!”

“I have really enjoyed the short course, I am so impressed with the standard of teaching”

I found the real life experiences of counselling very informative and the course tutor a great inspiration for moving forward in counselling”

Informative and fun interactive sessions”

“The Introduction to Counselling course exceeded all my expectations. The teaching was fantastic and the content was pitched at just the right level and with sufficient depth to be thoroughly worthwhile. There was a really good relationship between the group that worked just as well online as it had in the few sessions we met in person pre-lockdown. I didn’t feel that anything was lost because the training wasn’t face-to-face – the breakout rooms in Zoom meant we could work with partners just as we would have done in person.

I’d recommend this course to anyone who either wants to find out whether counselling is for them or to understand more about communicating and how to listen. In fact, if everyone did this course, the world would be a better place!”
