Introduction to Counselling

If you’re unsure if counselling is the right path for you or which modality of counselling you would like to study in, our Introduction to Counselling course gives you an overview of the different modalities to study in, which includes psychodynamic, person centred, integrative and CBT.

These are 12 hour introductory courses delivered over 4 or 6 weeks, providing an accessible and interesting insight to the theory and practice of counselling.  While the course is primarily theoretical, it also develops some awareness of the basic skills in counselling practice, like active listening.

The Foundation Certificate in Psychodynamic Counselling Skills & Theory is a 1-year part time access course

Whether you choose to undertake our Foundation Certificate alone or if you would like to continue the journey to becoming a fully accredited counsellor, our Foundation course is the first step.  Alternatively, it is also widely recognised as an access course to many other institutions’ professional training, provides the grounding for further training to become a professional counsellor.

The course also aims to provide those who wish to develop counselling skills in work-based and other settings with the skills and knowledge, which will enhance and support their work.

Psychodynamic counselling initially evolved from Sigmund Freud’s theories on the unconscious and the importance of early childhood experiences that go on to shape our present day relationships.  As such throughout the course you will  develop knowledge and understanding about yourself as you delve into the theory of personal development and the underlying principles of the psychodynamic counselling approach.

“The course not only teaches theory and skills but encourages self reflection and growth.”
Pam Firth, Programme Tutor

Upon successful completion of this course, you will have gained the underpinning knowledge and skills needed to be considered for a place on our Diploma in Psychodynamic Counselling.  Alternatively, it is also widely recognised as an access course to many other institutions’ professional training.

The course may inspire you to go on and study our professional part-time psychodynamic counselling courses which are Post-Graduate and Masters level psychotherapy training programmes which are endorsed and accredited by the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP).
