Finalist | Service to the Community: Herts Advertiser Community Awards

We’re proud to be a finalist in the Service to the Community category in the Herts Advertiser Community Awards 2019.

Being a finalist helps us raise awareness of the valuable work we deliver in supporting our community to benefit from counselling.

The Counselling Foundations’ charitable counselling provides essential life-saving and life-enhancing help to improve the mental health of those in the St Albans community.  Our St Albans centre supports over 90 people every week with concerns including bereavement and other loss, anxiety, depression, disability and other life issues.

As most clients can’t pay the full cost of high-quality counselling, and given the nature of open-ended therapy, this service is loss-making, and supported entirely through funds raised by dedicated  staff working hard throughout the year on enterprises including training, contract services and grants.

We strive to support as many as possible and counselling contracts help us achieve this. We are the largest provider of counselling to patients of the NHS across Hertfordshire, which is free at the point of access with a referral from the GP.

Part of the charity’s mission for over 45 years has been to teach our community that counselling is more than “just listening” but an active and empathetic guide to clients finding their own solutions and making a life-long change. This can have positive, long-term ramifications for the clients’ physical health, chances of employment and for the wellbeing of the whole family.

There are many organisations who have successfully campaigned alongside us in the media and this has broken down the stigma of asking for support with mental health. However the surge in demand cannot be met by the NHS and it is increasingly falling to charities such as ours to provide the help that people are seeking.

Our comments from clients show gratitude to the Foundation, and their proud achievements show the effectiveness of counselling that is provided and how it has helped people overcome anxiety and isolation or just simply to be able to live their lives to the fullest.

“I have had three close bereavements through my period in counselling and having these sessions have helped me deal with my loss.”

“[The counsellor] has been fantastic and I couldn’t have got by without her. So professional in all aspects of her job and went out of her way to help me get through my problems.”

“I had terrible problems driving – suffering much anxiety. Now to drive on a motorway would indicate to me that I am in a place of self-belief and independence.”

Our mission is to make long term counselling available to anyone experiencing anxiety, depression, loss or life changing events.
