Saturday 10th October was World Mental Health Day and to celebrate The Counselling Foundation took a stall on St Albans Market to raise money to fund our low cost counselling for the community by hosting a Great British Bake Off of our own.

The generous people of St Albans donated over £365 from buying cakes of all shapes and sizes, giving contributions and entering a raffle with prizes from local businesses The Pudding Stop, Wilde About Hair, Sweaty Betty and HC MedSpa.

The money will subsidise over 70 counselling sessions for local people on low incomes who need someone to talk to.

Whilst children were busy decorating cupcakes, adults spoke openly about being or knowing someone affected by mental health.

Becci Murtagh, Head of Marketing at The Counselling Foundation said “it was inspiring to see how many people were happy to discuss their own direct or indirect experience of anxiety, depression and stress, or express an interest in wanting to help others in those situations. It’s clear that charitable counselling and counsellor training is really needed across Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire, and we will continue to support our communities with these services.”

One in four adults and one in ten children will suffer from mental health problems in any given year and it is estimated that only a quarter of those will receive ongoing treatment, leaving the majority to struggle on their own.

A combination of long waiting lists or high private costs coupled with an ill-informed and damaging attitude still existing among some people, makes it hard for a large proportion of the tens of millions of people affected in the UK to seek help. World Mental Health Day seeks to educate, raise awareness of good mental health and publicise the services on offer.

Becci added “We ask that clients contribute only what they feel they can reasonably pay. The Foundation exists to make counselling accessible for all for as long as it is needed. With help from the public we can eradicate the stigma of mental health and encourage everyone who needs support to step forward. Please do not hesitate to get in touch if you have any questions.”
